Sylvia Mendez was just 8 years old when her aunt took her to enroll at 17th Street Elementary.  The Mendez family was told that Sylvia and her brothers could not enroll in the all-white school because she was Hispanic. Over 5,000 students were represented as the family bought a lawsuit against the school district that became a landmark case in the fight to desegregate schools.
